Humans choose stability over change.
People say they want change. “I want to improve.” “I don't want things to stay like this.” “I want to be different.” But their actual actions tell a different story. People choose to preserve their current self. Why? Because change isn't a matter of skill; it's a matter of identity. Let's consider some examples. When exercise starts showing results, they suddenly create a cheat day. When a relationship deepens, they suddenly create distance. When studying becomes routine, distractions suddenly increase. On the surface, it looks like coincidence. But the structure is the same. The moment real change starts happening, this question rises within you: “If this continues, will I become different?” The moment this question becomes uncomfortable, resistance begins. This isn't a lack of willpower. It's identity defense.
The self has a safe definition.
We've lived within these definitions until now. “I'm someone who gets easily swayed.” “I'm someone who lacks consistency.” “I'm someone swayed by emotions.” This definition is uncomfortable but familiar. Familiarity is safe. Within this definition, failure is explained. Expectations are lowered. Challenges diminish. But when repetition starts to challenge this definition, the ego reacts. “Wait, if this keeps up, am I no longer who I used to be?”
What repetition challenges.
What you've been doing so far wasn't just technical training. You recorded. You automated. You fixed the conditions. In this process, you began to touch your own reaction structure. When repetition ceases to be chance and becomes structure, the self asks: “If this continues, who am I?” “What does my past self become?” “Do my standards hold?” When these questions arise, an indescribable resistance emerges. Suddenly, you don't want to do it. Minor reasons become major. Trivial matters become excuses. The reason Su-jin wanted to stop wasn't fatigue or busyness. It was because her reaction patterns were actually starting to change. The ego sensed that change and reacted. This isn't regression. It's a signal that the structure is beginning to shift.
Resistance manifests in three ways.
The first is fatigue. You suddenly feel tired. You had tired days three weeks ago too. Back then, it was possible. Now it's not possible. Fatigue isn't the cause. The ego is using fatigue as an excuse.
The second is busyness. Suddenly, your schedule fills up. This week feels too busy. You think you can start again next week. A week ago, there were also busy days. Back then, you reacted within 3 seconds. Now, you don't even have 3 seconds. Busyness isn't the cause. The ego is using busyness as an excuse.
The third is doubt. Thoughts like these arise: “Does this really have meaning?” “Isn't this just repetition?” They sound like reasonable questions. But you must consider the timing. Doubt appeared precisely at the moment change actually began to happen.
This point is not failure.
Many people stop here. And they say: “See, I can't do it.” “I lack willpower.” “This is just who I am.” But this stage isn't failure. It's a boundary. It's where your identity wavers. If nothing had changed, this discomfort wouldn't exist. Your ego pushing back signals that something is actually shifting. If you stop here, you revert to your old standards. And repeat the same pattern.
Now the question is this:
