The subtitle is: God has put down a deposit on my heart. The faith we hold is not a matter of believing when we feel like it and not believing when we don't. It rests on something firm — a sound account of how things actually are. And it is not something dreamed up inside a human head. It is what God gave, set down in an orderly way for our descendants and for many people. Where We Have Been These Eight Weeks Before we get to the main text, let me lay out, in broad strokes, the road we have traveled over nearly nine weeks now. Text: Ephesians 5:18 Opening This is the eighth Sunday after Pentecost, and I want to preach on this: being filled with the Spirit is not an emotional surge — it is the fullness of Christ. This year we are walking through the season after Pentecost all the way to week twenty-seven. And for seven weeks now we have been holding onto a single question. Who is the Holy Spirit, and what does He actually do inside me? Where We Have Been These Seven Weeks Week one settled who He is.   Sunday Message — The Seventh Sunday After Pentecost The Holy Spirit Gives Us Not a Spirit of Fear but the Spirit of Adoption Text: Romans 8:12–17 Opening This morning is the seventh Sunday after Pentecost, and I want to preach on this: the Holy Spirit gives us not a spirit of fear but the Spirit of adoption. Because the season after Pentecost runs more than twenty-seven weeks this year, I am staying with this subject and letting it unfold week by week. I do not know how long we will keep going, but for now we have arrived at week seven. Today I want us to see that the Spirit gives us not a spirit of fear but the Spirit of adoption, and to look closely at what direction the Spirit actually moves in, and what work He actually does, inside our hearts.
